Ushuaia Winter

There are different winter centres where it is possible not only skiing in wonderful valleys, settled between rugged mountains, but also practising a varied range of sports and activities.

Tierra del Fuego

Nearly 500 years ago, a group of explorers from the Old World discovered for the first time the coasts of an unknown land.

Perito Moreno

The great ruptures phenomenon is reached when the front part of the glacier reaches Magallanes...

This it is a chronological review

When the europeans arrived to the region, our Island was occupied by hunter-gatherers and fishermen.

The Selk’nam: Occupied the north-west center area of Tierra del Fuego. Known also as Onas. They were pedestrian hunters, they depended basically on the guanaco hunt. Occasionally they caught birds and when they arrived at the beach, they picked up mollusks (cholgas, mussels) and beached marine mammals.

The Haush: They were located at Peninsula Mitre. Some authors believe that they originally were pedestrian hunters, as the Onas, but that they were displaced bye them to that peninsula of the Tierra del Fuego Island. There they adapted to the coast marine life. They called themselves; Manekenkn.

The Yamana: They were located at both margins of the Beagle Channel and adjacent channels until the Cape Horn. They were very well adapted to the coast marine life, they hunted marine wolves mainly because of their high-fat content, one of their main feeding sources. Their torso was wide and long in contrast with its inferior extremities. Thomas Bridges named them Yahgan, because the Murray Channel (Yahga-Shaga) was more or less in the centre of their territory. They called themselves Yamana and they are known as the “Canoeists of the Beagle” (Canoeros del Beagle)

The Alakalufes: They populated the area from the Breck nock peninsula (Chile) to the North, occupying most of the Chilean islands, including part of the Big Island (Tierra del Fuego). Their main activity was the fishing, the same as the Yamanas.
